VICKI'S SPOTLIGHT
Lifelong Friends
The Power of Human Connections

Happy November, Travel Partners!

Around this time of year, we place special emphasis on the people in our lives. Everything is about togetherness. What makes my job so satisfying isn't just providing wonderful vacations but also all the wonderful people that I've worked with and relationships I've developed over the years. Our industry has so much joy and camaraderie. Even with other suppliers there's no animosity, it's one big happy family. As big as the world is, it's really small and that's another reason that treating each other with kindness and keeping in touch is so important.

Let me tell you a story to show what I mean. When I was in college, there was a group of Japanese students I would see around. They largely kept to themselves, but there was one girl that stood out to me. She always sat by herself, never truly with the group, so I invited her to sit with my friends one day. Her name was Kazuko. She had cerebral palsy so it was difficult for her to talk, beyond not knowing English very well. We got to know her and developed a deep bond throughout college—so much so that I visited Japan a few years later with my friend Roberta Jacoby and we stopped by Kazuko's house in a rural region called Gifu Prefecture. When I got married, she and her mother even surprised me and flew all the way from Japan to attend my wedding.

As life goes, we unfortunately lost touch, though so much reminded me of her and I would think of her often. Recently I found an old letter she had written to me and I tried finding her on Facebook, on Google, anywhere you can think of but she didn't seem to be online. So I took a chance and wrote a handwritten letter to the return address on the envelope, as futile as it seemed. Was she even living there anymore? Would she remember me? Wouldn't you know it, I got a response and she still remembered me, almost 25 years later. She said she thought about me often and was glad to see that I was thinking of her, too.

It just goes to show the power of human connection. It can survive the years, it can survive the many miles. It's what we live for, and as travel partners we're lucky to have the opportunity to touch so many lives on a day-to-day basis. Don't take it for granted—keep in touch with the people who matter to you, send them a little note now and then to let them know you're thinking of them. You never know when a chance encounter might turn into a lifelong friendship.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, and remember to keep in touch!
