Ready to set sail! The ship was docked right next to the Sydney Bridge

Sydney, Australia
My cruise began in Sydney, where we spent an extra day beforehand enjoying the sites of the city. I stayed at the beautiful Westin Hotel, which occupies the city's original post office building — and it delivered that Starwood-heavenly experience! After settling into my room, my family and I walked the Sydney Bridge for panoramic views and visited the famous Opera House. A spectacular fireworks show that evening left us WOWed — tell you clients not to miss it, every Saturday at 9pm. The next day, before boarding, we took a private bus tour for 8 (which our shore excursion department can help create for your own clients as well). The tour took us to places such as Bondi Beach (think Venice Beach in Los Angeles) and Mrs. Macquarie's Chair (a lookout over the city). After the tour, we boarded the Celebrity Solstice, our home away from home for the next 12 nights.

The Opera House was within walking distance from the ship.

Melbourne, Australia
In Melbourne, we took another private tour with Kenneth Park, a widely-traveled cultural historian and curator. He led us through the National Gallery of Victoria art museum, the botanical gardens, the Shrine of Remembrance (a park and memorial for war veterans) and gave us the background on street art along the way (Melbourne has gained international notoriety for its street works). Kenneth was extremely knowledgeable, and I would highly recommend booking him through our shore excursion department.

Dunedin, New Zealand
When we first arrived in New Zealand, we sailed through the Milford, Doubtful and Dusky Sounds, which were as spectacular as the mountainous landscape in Alaska, but greener. Once in Dunedin, we took a walking tour of Lanarch Castle (a famous historic home in the city) and a 4x4 eco tour of the Natures Wonders conservation experience. If your clients are nature and animal lovers, this is the place for them! Our tour was led by the owner of the company himself, Perry Reid, who was filled to the brim with enthusiasm. Perry and his family personally lead tours 7 days a week, and their love for their land is truly infectious. While with him, we saw one-day-old sea lions, blue penguins, and sheep.

Akaroa, New Zealand
Next up: Akaroa, where my family and I experienced the exclusive Trans Alpine Train Tour described at right. This tour was an all-day affair and is perfect for people who want to view expansive farmland and parts of the Souther Alps. Following several hours of travel on both train and bus, we arrived at a Victorian farm, where we watched sheep herded and sheared.

Wellington, New Zealand
In the country's capital, we embarked on a Renaissance Tour shore excursion to Te Papa Museum (very interactive and informative), Old St. Paul's Church, and the Botanical Gardens.
ARRANGING AN EXCLUSIVE NEW ZEALAND TOUR

Thanks to Tony Petrie at Renaissance Tours, each of our New Zealand ports featured an exciting excursion. Tony is the leading tour operator in New Zealand and has an impeccable reputation for immersive tours with a high level of guest satisfaction. Through our shore excursion department, he also offers exclusive experiences, such as the Trans Alpine Train Tour. This tour can only be booked through our ships since Tony buys out the entire train to take passengers across large expanses of beautiful national park land. There were many tourists on the pier trying unsuccessfully to buy this tour from independent tour operators. Remember to communicate to your client the value and exclusivity of Royal and Celebrity excursions like this!

The Te Papa Museum was a visual and educational treat.

Tauranga, New Zealand
In Tauranga, we boarded a private vehicle to Te Puia Maori Cultural Centre. What a truly VIP experience: a private lunch cooked by a gourmet chef in a natural geyser next to our table (how often do you get to say that?). The meal included delectable shellfish, wine, freshly baked bread, and delicious, native vegetables. You can arrange this same meal for your very upscale clients, including corporate and meeting groups, by calling our shore excursion department. Take it from me, this will be an unforgettable experience that your clients will talk about long after the vacation is over (my own family continues to rave about it!). Besides the unique lunch, we enjoyed this site because we got a close-up look at traditional woodcarving, weaving, dance, kiwi birds, and mud pools.

A one-of-a-kind meal we'll remember for a long time to come.

Last stop
The cruise ended in Aukland, the largest city in New Zealand. We were sad to reach the end of so many memorable experiences on land, and on the Solstice. It was a luxury to return to the ship each evening and enjoy an amazing meal (main dining was fantastic, and the three specialty restaurants were absolutely worth the extra fee). Over and over again, we were thrilled by the accommodations and service we received onboard the Celebrity Solstice. And this same standard can be found on the three Royal Caribbean ships that also cruise this region (Radiance of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas, and Voyager of the Seas). Celebrity worked best for my family's availability, but I would have loved to experience the Rhapsody or the Radiance, both just renovated with Oasis-class upgrades.

Hope your new year is going wonderfully! Feel free to email me if you're planning an Australia & New Zealand cruise and would like to add some special touches.

Warm regards,
